Park rangers recovered the body of a 38-year-old man near the bottom of the Kilauea Caldera in Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park. His name was being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

At about 7 p.m. Saturday, two visitors found a backpack on the Crater Rim Trail and notified dispatchers. Rangers searched the caldera rim and floor for the man to no avail and suspended the search due to unsafe conditions, said spokeswoman Jessica Ferracane in a statement.

The search resumed at dawn Sunday, when rangers aboard a helicopter spotted the man’s body about 250 feet below the caldera rim at about 5:35 a.m.

Ferracane said the body was in an area that is not erupting.

Isle sex assault fugitive recaptured

Federal authorities said a fugitive from Honolulu wanted on sex assault charges was arrested Monday in Puerto Rico.

U.S. marshals said in a press release that Israel Vega Malave, 35, of Mililani had been released on bail pending trial and was arrested in Guayama, Puerto Rico. Malave was first arrested in 2013 on three counts of first-degree sexual assault and three counts of third-degree sexual assault.

An arrest warrant was issued after he failed to appear for trial June 26.
